What should I do about a water leak?
Every homeowner should be familiar with primary shut-off valve on the water line between the street and the house. It is generally in the front yard close to the house. Because it may not be highly visible, it's a good idea to locate and mark it for easy access in an emergency. A special "key" tool is required to turn the valve. It can be purchased at local hardware stores. Call 601-924-2239 to report leaks or 601-924-5252 after normal business hours.

How can I keep my water consumption and bill to a minimum?
Dry summer weather drives up water consumption. We recommend hot weather grasses such as Bermuda; the use of soaker hoses to minimize evaporation and concentrate water at flower, shrub and tree roots; and to water in the early morning to benefit plants and avoid evaporation in the heat of the day. A "running" or malfunctioning toilet can consume a remarkable amount of water during a short period of time. Check and repair quickly.

What do I do in case of a sewage backup?
The City is responsible for the installation and maintenance of the sanitary sewer system that lies beneath city streets. The homeowner is responsible for the line between the house and its connection at the street to the major sewer line. When a sewer stoppage occurs, the source of the problem is not always immediately apparent. For sewer back up problems: 601-924-2239 (7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays) 601-924-5252 (after hours and weekends and holidays)

What are the guidelines for residential garbage collection?
Household Waste is collected twice a week from containers at curbside and will not be collected from behind fences or locked gates, in garages, carports or storage areas. Garbage cans must be visible, accessible, in one location, and no larger than a 32-gallon container. Personal effects not intended for collection should be kept away from the collection area. Garbage cans used for storage bins should not be in the collection area. Collectors will not enter an area where dogs are present. Occupants must provide a safe and convenient area for collection of household garbage. Bag waste materials before placing in the garbage cans. Items that won't fit in cans should be placed at curbside. Homeowners are responsible for taking cans to curbside and returning the cans to their usual location. Containers, trash or yard waste must be placed behind the curb, not in the gutter or street. Garbage and yard waste must be separated. - Cardboard boxes, furniture, appliances or similar bulky items must be placed at curbside for collection. - Refrigerators, air conditioners, freezers, dehumidifiers, ice makers or any item that contains refrigerants will not be collected unless the refrigerant has been removed by a certified technician (in compliance with the Clean Air Act). State law requires that doors be removed from the appliance and properly tagged when placed at curb for collection. - The City encourages homeowners not to place trash at the curb more than 24 hours before the scheduled pickup.

Will the garbage collectors pick up yard waste?
Yes. However, there are some guidelines for collection, as shown below: Tree trimmings, plants, and prunings must be stacked neatly within two (2) feet of the curb, less than five (5) feet in length, less that sixty (60) pounds in weight and no more than six (6) inches in diameter. Do not be place them in the flow line of the curb or ditch area. Materials should be in a temporary container, bagged or secured in a bundle so they can be cleanly and neatly lifted from the curb area to the collection truck. Large items such as tree limbs and logs should be separate from bagged materials or small bundles. Please do not place such materials at the curb until the afternoon or evening before the scheduled pick up. If a homeowner uses a yard maintenance service, landscaping service, or construction firm, the service is expected to take the natural refuse or building material debris away. Sand, dirt, gravel, concrete, bricks, stone, steel poles, sheetrock, ceramic tile, gutters, fencing and auto parts will not be collected. Homeowner must dispose of these items at a private landfill.
